Universalism versus Particularism is an idea sent by Fons Trompenaars, a Dutch creator. Fundamentally, this measurement inquires as to whether which is increasingly essential to you, rules or connections. The Universalist, or rule-based, approach is generally: â€Å"What is acceptable and right can be characterized and ALWAYS applies. † In particularistic societies, far more prominent consideration is given to the commitments of connections and one of a kind conditions. Universalism versus Particularism demonstrates how a general public applies rules of ethics and morals. In a Universal society, for example, the U. S. , rules and agreements are created which can apply in any circumstance. For instance, take the instance of attempting to go across the road at the red light. In a very standard based society like the U. S. , you will in any case be grimaced at regardless of whether there is no traffic. It will in general suggest uniformity as in all people, or residents, falling under the standard ought to be dealt with the equivalent. Despite what might be expected, in Asian social orders like Taiwan, where particularist decisions center around the excellent idea of conditions, it is probably going to approve of one on the off chance that it is his/her siblings or companions that abuse the traffic rule. These individuals are not â€Å"citizens†, however their â€Å"friends† or â€Å"brothers†. This distinction presumably clarifies why there have been troubles in executing a legal framework that is valid in our nation. Solid universalist societies utilize the court to intercede clashes. The more all inclusive a nation is the more prominent is the need to secure reality. Worldwide working organizations think almost certain in a universalistic manner. At the point when universalistic specialists consent to an agreement identifying with a high worth arrangement there are consistently attorneys required to guarantee that everything about accurately referenced and ensured by a section. On the off chance that one gathering would break a piece of the submitted bargain it is conceivable to draw the outcomes and sue the partner. In particularisticic societies lawful agreements don’t just stay faithful to their commitments something is recorded on paper. More than that they trust, depend and put stock in the business relationship which was develop in the time before the agreement was examined. Chinese representatives trust particularly on connections between the accomplices and exacting guidelines/definitions would presumably irritate/affront the accomplice since they would get the possibility that they aren’t trustful and are con artist. The significance of connections again strength be painstakingly thought of and considered particularly from universalistic societies when managing particularistic societies. Chinese attempt to keep the agreements ambiguous and not very tied. It may happen that Chinese specialists will in any case attempt to haggle a while later even the agreement was at that point marked/shut and concurred from all locales. In dealings Chinese will invest a ton of energy in working up a relationship with their colleagues so the genuine exchange will be toward the finish of the gathering time. While Americans managing Chinese, Americans frequently attempt to close arrangements as quick as could be expected under the circumstances. In any case, because of the Chinese method to make bargains the Americans may submit a bigger number of points of interest than previously suspected just to surge forward and close an arrangement. This can be a preferred position for particularistic societies. Universalist societies center typically more around rules than on connections. For example American workers contend hard for better employment positions and to move up in the progressive system and win more cash. They do this without thinking about associates and the relationship with them. In examination, particularistic societies like China center vigorously around connections. When working with/overseeing particularistic, universalists should construct casual systems and make private understandings just as they should attempt to search for reasonableness in working together by treating and looking on cases each as a particular one. Particularistic societies evade unbending or normalized frameworks to oversee across societies. They rather want to leave some space for changes which may happen later on process. A few generalizations state that Germans are gifted to fabricate framework and Americans are incredible to create and design new items/thoughts. At the point when markets turned out to be increasingly individual and explicit the USA came into issue with their method of large scale manufacturing and mass promoting. Particularly in rivalry with particularistic nations likes France who is orientated on individual and altered items.

Scholarship Essay Ending Samples - Tips For Writing A Great One

Scholarship Essay Ending Samples - Tips For Writing A Great OneThe last part of your scholarship essay is a great deal more important that the first part. If you don't take your time to consider your examples carefully, you will not be able to make the most of it. When you've finished your part, I'll explain how to approach the rest of the essay, so that you can give yourself the best possible chance of earning the scholarship you want. It's not a good idea to overlook any of the tips in this article. They're quite important. That's why I included them in an article. If you're able to combine them with the other tips I mention in the article, you can end up with the best essay for scholarship writing. To begin with, I would recommend that you create a glossary at the start of your essay. This is a fantastic way to consolidate your knowledge. I don't know many people who aren't familiar with the words they use and the diction they use. By creating a glossary to go with your essay, you c an do the same thing for your vocabulary. Instead of making use of several new words, you can just refer to the dictionary whenever you need to use a word you've never used before.Another thing to consider in your scholarship essay is your rhetorical technique. Many writers think that this is all there is to writing an essay. This is absolutely not true. If you want to know what a specific article has to offer, then you need to understand the fundamentals of effective writing. By analyzing what your critics have to say about your essay, you'll be able to work out what the most effective styles are.One way of highlighting a part of your scholarship essay is to use a metaphor. There's nothing wrong with using metaphors in this fashion. An analogy works best when you use it to put the concept into context. Using metaphors for specific examples can help you make it a lot easier to remember. Also, don't forget to list the things you include in your essay. If you think about it, this is th e most important part of your essay. If you simply copy out one paragraph from your workbook, you won't remember much of what you wrote. However, if you include the different parts of your workbook, then you'll be able to use the material later without too much effort. If you're writing an essay, it's a good idea to include these things as part of your submission. The final tip I have for you about scholarship essays is that you should include an essay section at the end of your essay. You should consider this section to be another part of your essay. Including this section is an effective way of getting the most out of your essay. Writing an essay can be a lot of work, but by including a section in the last part of your essay, you can see a big improvement in your ability to express yourself properly.

The Victoria s Secret Catalog Never Stops Coming And...

The Victoria’s Secret Catalog Never Stops Coming and Other Lesson I Learned from Breast Cancer delivers an entertaining account and perspective on a young woman’s journey of surviving breast cancer. Nash’s account not only highlights the hardships and difficult decisions one must endure but focuses on the small lessons learned that lead to a more positive experience with breast cancer. The memoir is an excellent resource to women recently diagnosed with breast cancer, family of the recently diagnosed, and those just wanting to understand the hardships of the diagnosis. In reviewing the memoir, the principal criteria included content, organization, and tone. The average age of a woman to have a mammogram is forty. However, this was not the case for Jennie Nash. After, her college roommate Lisa was diagnosed with lung cancer, Nash developed what would be considered hypochondriac behavior. She focused on the idea that she was sick and had some sort of cancer as well due to a persisting pain in her left breast. Therefore at the age of thirty-six, she decided to get a mammogram. Even though Nash was young and had no history of breast cancer in her family, she found that the odds were not in her favor. At the age of thirty-six it was confirmed that her right breast was full of small malignant tumors. Nash was young, had to small children, and now breast cancer. Hucks crazy life Essay Example For Students

Hucks crazy life Essay In the novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain, there is a lot of superstition. Some examples ofsuperstition in the novel are Huck killing a spider which is bad luck, the hair-ball used to tell fortunes, and the rattle-snakeskin Huck touches that brings Huck and Jim good and bad luck. Superstition plays an important role in the novel Huck Finn. In Chapter one Huck sees a spider crawling up his shoulder, so he flipped it off and it went into the flame of the candle. Before he could get it out, it was already shriveled up. Huck didnt need anyone to tell him that it was an bad sign and wouldgive him bad luck. Huck got scared and shook his clothes off, and turned in his tracks three times. He then tied a lock of hishair with a thread to keep the witches away. You do that when youve lost a horseshoe that youve found, instead of nailingit up over the door, but I hadnt ever heard anybody say it was any way to keep of bad luck when youd killed aspider.(Twain 5). In chapter four Huck sees Paps footprints in the snow. So Huck goes to Jim to ask him why Pap is here. Jim gets a hair-ball that is the size of a fist that he took from an oxs stomach. Jim asks the hair-ball; Why is Pap here? Butthe hair-ball wont answer. Jim says it needs money, so Huck gives Jim a counterfeit quarter. Jim puts the quarter under thehair-ball. The hair-ball talks to Jim and Jim tells Huck that it says. Yoole father doan know yit what hes a-gwyne to do. Sometimes he spec hell go way, en den agin he spec hell stay. De bes way is tores easy en let de ole man take his ownway. Deys two angles hoverin roun bout him. One uvem is white en shiny, en tother one is black. De white one gits himto go right a little while, den de black one sil in en gust it all up. A body cant tell yit which one gwyne to fetch him at de las. But you is all right. You gwyne to have considable trouble in yo life, en considable joy. Sometimes you gwyne to git hurt, ensometimes you gwyne to git sick; but every time yous gwyne to git well agin. Deys two gals flyin bout yo in yo life. Oneuv ems light en tother one is dark. One is rich en tother is po. Yous gwyne to marry de po one fust en de rich one by enby. You wants to keep way fum de water as much as you kin, en dont run no resk, kase its down in de bills dat yousgwyne to git hung. (Twain 19). Huck goes home and goes up to his room that night and Pap is there. In Chapter ten, Huckand Jim run into good luck and bad luck. The good luck was Huck and Jim finds eight dollars in the pocket of an overcoat. After dinner on Friday, they are lying in the grass, then Huck ran out of tobacco, so he went to the craven to get some, andfinds a rattlesnake. Huck kills it and curled it up and put it on the foot of Jims blanket. Night came and Jim flung himself onthe blanket and the snakes mate was there, and it bit Jim on the heel. Jim tells Huck to chop off the snakes head, then skinthe body of the snake and roast a peice of it. He took the rattles off and tied them to Jim wrist. Jim said it would help him. .u6e61f2c4dc3967f8d23781b51b5dbb01 , .u6e61f2c4dc3967f8d23781b51b5dbb01 .postImageUrl , .u6e61f2c4dc3967f8d23781b51b5dbb01 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u6e61f2c4dc3967f8d23781b51b5dbb01 , .u6e61f2c4dc3967f8d23781b51b5dbb01:hover , .u6e61f2c4dc3967f8d23781b51b5dbb01:visited , .u6e61f2c4dc3967f8d23781b51b5dbb01:active { border:0!important; } .u6e61f2c4dc3967f8d23781b51b5dbb01 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u6e61f2c4dc3967f8d23781b51b5dbb01 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u6e61f2c4dc3967f8d23781b51b5dbb01:active , .u6e61f2c4dc3967f8d23781b51b5dbb01:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u6e61f2c4dc3967f8d23781b51b5dbb01 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u6e61f2c4dc3967f8d23781b51b5dbb01 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u6e61f2c4dc3967f8d23781b51b5dbb01 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u6e61f2c4dc3967f8d23781b51b5dbb01 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u6e61f2c4dc3967f8d23781b51b5dbb01:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u6e61f2c4dc3967f8d23781b51b5dbb01 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u6e61f2c4dc3967f8d23781b51b5dbb01 .u6e61f2c4dc3967f8d23781b51b5dbb01-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u6e61f2c4dc3967f8d23781b51b5dbb01:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Can Media Inspire Violent Crimes? Mechanical Restraint in Hospitals free essay sample

A review of a research into the staffing pattern of mechanical restraint use across a multiple hospital system. This paper examines a research aimed at establishing a link between the limitation of mechanical restraint on patients and the staffing of nurses. It describes the various stages of the research. The collection of the data was accomplished through the Data Management Center in the School of Nursing and through interviews and observations conducted by the researchers themselves. The variables that the collection of data was dependent on were the Data Management Center, but this was not clearly explained. The system that was used was certainly open to the influence of those handling the data. This could certainly affect the overall results. The design was certainly non-experimental as it depended on the data that was extracted from other sources as well as their own. Descriptive statistics were tabulated for all variables. There was a statistical test performed for each of the hypothesis and research question. Suicide Bombings on the Dorrat Al Jadawel Compound

Suicide Bombings on the Dorrat Al Jadawel Compound Overview On May 12, 2003 three separate teams of terrorists carried out suicide bomb attacks on the Dorrat Al Jadawel compound, the Al Hamra Oasis Village and the Vinnel Corporation Compound all of which were located in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.Advertising We will write a custom research paper sample on Suicide Bombings on the Dorrat Al Jadawel Compound specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Their actions resulted in the deaths of 35 people with well over 160 others injured in the process (The world this week, 2003). It was an attack that was unprecedented in the history of Saudi Arabia since it was ideological in nature and was aimed specifically at foreign nationals (The world this week, 2003). When examining the various aspects of this case the most interesting facet is the motivation behind the actions of the suicide bombers. As seen in the recorded wills that were made shortly before they carried out their suicide attacks, one interconnect ing theme between all of the bombers is their assumption that what they do is for the greater good in that through their actions they would rescue and defend their fellow Arabs from the unjust incursions of foreign powers on both the land and culture of the Arab people. In fact various studies which have examined the psychological underpinnings of suicide bombings have shown that most if not all of the participants involved dont view the potentially dozens of people they may kill as a sin rather for them it is an act of devotion towards the precepts of Islam (Cooper, 2008). When taking such factors into consideration it is thus important to examine the reactions of the general public towards the actions of the suicide bombers. The reason behind this is quite simple, if the suicide bombers are doing this for the people as they say then it is important to understand the whether the general public has a positive or negative reaction towards such violent actions which are supposedly for their sake. Objectives The objective of this report is to investigate the following: 1.) Discern the general impression the selected respondents have on the suicide bombing incidents in Riyadh.Advertising Looking for research paper on social sciences? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More 2.) Determine whether the respondents would be more inclined towards thinking of terrorism in a positive way if it were to occur in another country. 3.) Examine the general impression the respondents have on foreign interests within Saudi Arabia. 4.) Analyze the reactions of the respondents towards the decision making process of the suicide bombers. 5.) Determine the current view of the respondents towards the actions of terrorist groups who radicalize certain elements of the Quran in order to justify bombing public areas. 6.) Examine the general impression the respondents have regarding the possible negative ramifications of correlated to Islam as a direct result of the actions of suicide bombers and terrorist groups. The following questions will also be asked from the respondents: Do you believe that the suicide bombers are being misinformed by terrorist groups regarding the necessity of violent action in order to achieve their goals? What do you believe is the primary reason why â€Å"volunteers† would willingly sacrifice their lives? Is it primarily a religious reason or are their social underpinnings regarding their actions? Do you think that the actions of the Riyadh suicide bombers was justified given the fact that so many innocent people died who had absolutely nothing to do with the U.S. lead invasion of Iraq? Do you harbor any ill will towards the U.S. is general? Or do you believe that it isn’t the American people who are at fault but rather their misguided leadership? From your point of view, do you believe it is justified to kill dozens of people for the sake of getting a point across? Hypothesis The hypothesis of this study is that while the general public within Saudi Arabia dont necessarily like the interference foreign powers (particularly the U.S.) have had on their land, culture and internal affairs most people think that acts of terrorism hinder rather than result in any positive resolution to the issue.Advertising We will write a custom research paper sample on Suicide Bombings on the Dorrat Al Jadawel Compound specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The sub-hypothesis of this study also assumes that the general public within Riyadh thinks the acts of terrorism actually result in global mistrust, apprehension and even vilification of Arabs in general which hinders international efforts towards peaceful relations with other cultures and states. Framing an Interview Schedule Due to the sensitive nature of this investigation the questionnaire results will be completely anonymous with the respondents of the study pick ed randomly within the school campus as well as various members of the local community near the campus or within the proximity of the researchers home. This is done in order to ensure a certain degree of diversity in the answers given. The questionnaires themselves will be handed on an individual basis with the researcher waiting for each participant to finish completing the questionnaire. After completion each respondent will be assured of the anonymity of their responses and that in no way will their identity be disclosed. This particular interview will be conducted on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday in order to get the maximum number of respondents for the questionnaire. Several members of the researcher’s friends and family will be asked to deliver questionnaires to various individuals that they know. This ensures that the research results will not be biased since the researcher is merely asking them to recruit respondents and not fill out the forms themselves. 10 respondents will be utilized for this particular study. Data Collection Response to the Questionnaire Positive Negative Impression on Suicide Bombers 5% 95% Impression on foreign interference 20% 80% Impression on the ideology behind suicide attacks 5% 95% Impression on Terrorist Organization’s use of Radical Islam 20% 80% Affect on the views of other countries on Islam as a result of the bombings 0% 100% Data Analysis The data from the respondents show that 95% of the respondents have a generally negative impression regarding the actions of suicide bombers and in fact 100% of them stated that in no way is terrorism justified whether in their country or another due to the loss of innocent life. Of the 5% that had a positive impression regarding the bombings their primary reasoning was connected to their belief that a message needed to be sent. Further examination of the research results showed that 80% of the respondents had a generally negative impression regarding forei gn interference within the internal domestic policies of Saudi Arabia and in fact the 80% regarded foreign interference as one of the main reasons behind the so called corruption of the traditional values within the nation. 20% of the respondents on the other hand a distinctly different impression since they regard western influences as another aspect of the globalization of cultures, business and even governance which people should embrace. When presented with the question regarding their impression of the decision making processes that influenced the terrorist bombers 95% agreed that the reasoning behind such actions were flawed and that it was merely a result of a radicalized interpretation of the Quran which many within the conservative Islamic state consider to be highly unethical and actually against the precepts established by the Prophet Mohammed.Advertising Looking for research paper on social sciences? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More From their point of view, the bloodshed and grief caused by acts of terrorism can never be truly justified especially when taking into consideration the fact that they are targeting the wrong individuals. On the other hand 5% of the respondents did agree with the actions of the bombers with the justification that the protection of the people justified such actions. Presented with the question regarding their impression of the use of terrorist groups of radicalized elements of Islam in order to convince people to commit acts of terrorism 80% of the respondents indicated that it was a vehement atrocity against the Quran to twist its words in such a way so as to cause someone to give up their life for a false cause. On the other hand 20% of the respondents indicated that the men responsible for the suicide bombings should be held accountable for their own actions since they had the ethical responsibility to not commit such atrocities in the first place yet still went through with it. N ot only that, 100% of the respondents are in agreement that the actions of the suicide bombers does cast a negative light on Islam since it creates a connotation between it and the radicalized actions of a few which is being attributed to the many by various countries all over the world which has resulted in a generally negative view against both the practitioners of Islam as well as Arabs in general. Overall, the results of the study show an overwhelming abhorrence from the respondents regarding the actions of suicide bombers. The primary reason behind this negative reaction is due to the fact that the people they are targeting are often the innocent who never really caused any harm. Interpretation of Findings Based on the findings of the investigation it clearly shows that a vast majority of the respondents for this study are clearly against the concept of suicide bombings. Various studies which have examined this particular issue from various angles indicate that the problem lies in the fact that such attacks dont discriminate against the innocent and the guilty and as such results in more problems than solutions. In fact studies such as those by Witty (2009) indicate that the various suicide attacks that have been occurring within the Middle East have mostly involved the deaths of innocent people which has resulted in public opinion turning against terrorist groups in general due to their non-discriminatory actions (Witty, 2009). It must also be noted that most people within the Muslim community view the actions of suicide bombers as generally originating from radicalized versions of Islamic text and are in no way in accordance with the primary methods of teaching of Islam. In fact various Islamic scholars point out that the way in which radical Islam (referring to the type of Islam espoused by people such as blind Sheik and Osama Bin Laden) is in fact so divergent from the original context that it is apparent that it has been warped by terrorist groups fo r their own purposes (Mohapatra, 2002). Most of the respondents agree that the interference of foreign powers in the domestic issues of states such as Saudi Arabia is disrespectful of the traditions and indigenous knowledge that are the cornerstones of the Arabic culture however they do acknowledge the fact that to resist all forms connectivity with the outside world is a terrible concept and would result in negative repercussions. In fact based on the data from the study, a majority of the respondents agree that the actions of suicide bomber actually creates a negative image regarding Islam and makes it that much more difficult to establish positive relationships with other states (Zuhdi, n.d). Thus, it can be stated that based on the results of the survey most of the respondents don’t agree with the actions of the suicide bombers and as such nullifies the argument of the bombers and terrorist groups who say that they are doing this for the â€Å"people†. If the peopl e themselves don’t want such actions to be done in the first place, how can it really be said that what they are doing is for the people at all? Conclusion The primary and sub hypothesis of this report has been proven to be accurate when it stated that while the general public within Saudi Arabia dont necessarily like the interference foreign powers (particularly the U.S.) have had on their land, culture and internal affairs most people think that acts of terrorism hinder rather than result in any positive resolution to the issue. Not only that, the study has also shown that the resulting image backlash as a direct result of the bombings has in effect adversely affected Islam and the Arabic people. What must be understood is that while people acknowledge the fact that there are problems they believe that the death of innocents is not the way to go about resolving such issues especially when taking into consideration the fact that the methods utilized are based on an aspect of Islam that is not accepted by mainstream leaders of the Islamic world. A Reflective Paper On The Importance On Teamwork Nursing Essay

A Reflective Paper On The Importance On Teamwork Nursing Essay What is a team work? Team work can be defined as when actions of individuals are brought together for the purpose of a common goal. Each person in a team puts his efforts to achieve the objectives of large group. Teams make efforts to achieve the success but not necessarily the success is achieved every time. Within a team every member plays a role to achieve the team’s objectives. These roles add new and important dimensions to interactions of team members. Bruce Tuckman’s team development theory provides a way to tackle the tasks of making a team through the completion of the project. On the part of the team every member played an important role to achieve the success at the end of semester. â€Å"Our planning (or worrying about) what’s happening next gives us little opportunity or inclination to examine what has just passed† (Wallace, 2005). Writing from the angle of teacher student and team member relationships, it was appropriate to look then above q uote. I believe that many students in a team hesitate to step further for their next action during the proceeding of project. I need to be reflective in my action for the future performance in a team. â€Å"Groups of employees who have at least some collective tasks and where the team members are authorised to regulate mutually the execution of these collective tasks† (Delarue, 2003). â€Å"Group work is defined by a common task requiring interdependent work and successive or integrative action† (Hacker, 1998). Belbin (1981) developed a model on team roles which was extended in Belbin’s (1993) publication. On the basis of the Belbin’s model the team performance can be observed when a winning or losing task is set for the team. Each member with assigned role balances the team role in a group and strong representation of all roles is predicted with high performance. I have experienced the same the role of every member in my team. Belbin makes a difference b etween two terms team role and functional role. It is necessary for a team to keep the optimum balance both in functional roles and team roles. On the other hands the Tuckman’s theory describes the four stages of small group development as forming, storming, norming and performing. However a fifth stage of adjourning was added which involves the completion of tasks, termination of roles and dissolution of groups. Belbin’s theory is helpful to identify the different types of the teams; the characteristics define the work of the four categories. This model explains that during the team developments conflicts and interpersonal issues are found there and team development is dependent on the quality communication and relationship maturity with better performance. In traditional setting this model is useful for many practitioners and team leaders. According to this model all members work at the same place and are engaged in predefined work. This model works at the micro leve l of teams when new tasks are introduced and people involved have worked together not for long time.

Unilever's participation in the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil Essay

Unilever's participation in the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil - Essay Example For the past years usage of palm oil has significantly increased and continues to grow. Today consumption of palm oil became 10 times more than it was in 1980. The World Wide Fund for Nature predicts that in 5 years the consumption of palm oil will double, thus making this industry very profitable and beneficial (What is palm oil? n.d.). Palm oil industry, being a profitable business and contributing to the economy of the producers' countries, makes negative impact on environment. The main results of such impact are deforestation (the forests are cut to increase the number of palm oil plantations), climate change (as a result of deforestation), air and water pollution, soil erosion (as fire is usually a mean of deforestation, and palm oil mills produce significant amounts of effluents), species extinction (as a result of climate change and environmental pollution), human health worsening (as a result of climate change and pollution) (What is palm oil? n.d., Sustainable and responsibl e palm oil n.d., Palm oil n.d., Basiron 2014). Because of the negative impact of palm oil industry, the world community started to talk about the necessity to attract attention of this business to the problems, make it sustainable and encourage the corporations, which deal with palm oil industry, to be responsible for their actions. Corporate social responsibility (CSR) can be viewed as a concept, according to which enterprises take into account interests of society, where they operate, and take responsibility for the influence of their activity on environment, society, workers and other stakeholders.

The bottled water industry and its effects Essay

The bottled water industry and its effects - Essay Example Another is by strengthening the practices of water conservation. By the year 2012, consumption of bottled water in the United States had risen to almost ten billion gallons representing 5.3% per capita consumption. It was estimated that every individual drank about thirty gallons yearly. Packaged water saw an upsurge in real volume more than any other category of beverage in the country. Sales had increased by 6.7 per cent totaling about eleven billion dollars (Eshleman, 7). The reasons provided for the monumental consumption of this water are that most consumers pay close attention to healthy choices for themselves as well as their families and are assured that a refreshing, safe and convenient bottle of water contains no calories, making it the most suitable choice on the menu. Many also appreciate the reliability and consistency of its quality. Both federal and state governments comprehensively regulate bottled water. The FDA (Food & Drug Administration) regulates it in the food product category, with guidelines that govern its quality as well as its safety, which are as rigorous as those of the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) of tap water (Andrews et al., 174). In spite of this, the bottled water industry has been facing a few challenges with regard to the field of sustainability. In the recent past, colossal opposition against bottled water has developed among an eclectic assortment of such advocates as restaurateurs, activists and even religious leaders. The propositions of the sector’s operations have evoked vocal protestation from local communities. Their rationale is that the production of bottled water requires a lot of energy and generates large amounts of waste that could have long-term environmental effects. Various cities like Chicago have begun taking up action in this respect by taxing bottled water. Others, such as San Francisco have completely banned bottled water from official functions. Toronto has not only banned the

Simon as Christ in Lord of the Flies Essay -- Lord Flies Essays

Simon as Christ in Lord of the Flies  Ã‚      The role of the prophet changes with the society in which he lives. In modern society, a prophet is a visionary, telling people what they can become; in Biblical times, a prophet was the voice of God, telling his people what they had to become to fulfill their covenant with God.   In William Golding's Lord of the Flies, the prophet is a peaceful lad, Simon.   He alone saw that the jungle, which represented freedom and the lack of civilization, was not to be feared but to be understood; he alone knew that the mythical Beast of the island, feared by all the boys, was, in fact, their own inherent savagery. Through these truths Simon represents a Christ figure paralleling Christ's misunderstood message and Christ's death.    Simon was the observant character, the quiet philosopher. He was often alone, sometimes by his own choice, and he liked to wander into the peaceful jungle. He sincerely cared about the other boys, sometimes helping the young ones to fetch fruit, yet "Simon turned away from them and went where the just perceptible path led him. Soon high jungle closed in" (56). He loved solitude and yet felt loneliness; he was alien to the other boys. The boys did not think anyone would be stupid enough to go into the jungle by night: "The assembly grinned at the thought of going out into the darkness. Then Simon stood up and Ralph looked at him in astonishment" (85). Many of the boys even thought he was "batty" because he left the group to spend time alone.      He did not fear the jungle, and he did not fear the Beast. "Maybe,' he said hesitantly, 'maybe there is a beast . . . maybe it's only us" (89). The Beast takes many forms in the boys' imaginations; once, t... ... The basic premise of Lord of the Flies is that humans naturally live in savagery and ignorance, without any idea of how to live together. The most terrifying death in the novel is that of Simon, who symbolizes the eyes of a blind and stumbling group of children digressing into savagery.   As Christ lived, so lived Simon, as Christ died, so died Simon.   Each died because human nature hates prophets, because humans naturally live in savagery and ignorance. Comments You state that Simon knew the jungle represented freedom and the lack of civilization.   However, in your paper you only prove that the other boys were afraid of the jungle while Simon was not.   You need to tell us how Simon knew what the jungle represented, why he was not afraid.   What makes him seek out the jungle for solitude?   Why does Simon understand when the other boys do not?

Individualism in “Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut Essay

Individualism is a very important thing in everyone’s life, its part of our personality as portrayed in the story called, â€Å"Harrison Bergeron† by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. Taking away that individualism is taking apart some of that person. The book in many ways shows what would happen if no one was different and all the people in the world were the same, or basically how disastrous. One example is when the Bergeron’s were watching TV and the announcer came on to announce. He started out enthusiastically and with fire, but automatically got a shock. He tried to act out and be the announcer man with energy, but since everyone was the same he just gave up and let the ballerina read the announcements in monotone voice. Now I for one would never want to hear n announcer that talked in one tone the whole entire time. I addition Vonnegut shows another example is how all the smart and beautiful people have to wear mental and physical handicaps. They wear those handicaps because the government wanted to make everyone equal. So basically if you were even a little bit smart, you would get a handicap and that went with physical attributes too. Finally, the author uses the character Harrison as how most people should act, but being someone different. He acted out and rebelled against the government when they were forcing everyone to be the same. Instead of going with the flow he chose to be himself, and literally broke the chains that the government was using to handicap him. Overall, being you is the best thing to do in life, but society today is portraying the perfect kid that everyone is trying to be.
